really, really dumb question

I'm in the process of buying a 03 f350 powerstroke. Just realized when I was looking at it I saw a belt diagram for the 7.3 and just assumed the 7.3 was in it without comparing the diagram to the engine or looking for a second diagram. I have seen one 6.0 with a double diagram for both diesels on it and just remembered my oversite. Now the dumb part, would ford put a 7.3 belt diagram on a 6.0 . Are there any other differences between the two that you can see just by looking. New to deisel, please excuse the ignorance, thanks

I have never seen a 6.0 in up close, but I was told that the trucks with the 6.0 have the chrome powerstroke tag on the door instead of the black one. I'm sure somebody will chime in with a better way to tell what motor it is soon

Check out the gallery on my site.
The Red F350 has the 6.0 and the Black Excursion has the 7.3 there are photos in each albumn of the engines so you can see the difference. Except the black X has a different HPOP cover, the stock one is just a black curved plastic piece with powerstroke in raised letters. The 6.0's have powerstrock V8 in red and black on the fan shroud. Another thing is the 6.0's have the coolant tank on the drivers side back by the fire wall and the alternator is on the passenger side. The 7.3 has the coolant tank on the radiator and the alternator is on the drivers side. Door badges for the 6.0 are chrome and red, the 7.3 are black and silver and longer.

A point of note - according to my readings, a lot of 2003 6.0s had some serious "teething" pains as a brand new motor. '04 had less troubles. How was yours, bigdaddyTank?

That is my dad's 6.0 its a late 03 build date and they seem to have fewer problems than the early build date 03's. Its got 38k miles with Zero problems.

Zero problems! That is excellent. A friend has an '04 6.0. He loves it. The only problem he has had (40K miles) is the exhaust Y-pipe cracked and was leaking exhaust underhood, where it went into the cab and stunk. Dealer fixed it under warranty.

My '00 7.3 had its first (and last) warranty repair at 99k miles - seems one of the intercooler boots was coming apart.

By contrast, another friend has an '01 Dredge with a Cummins. Engine has been great, but the truck has been in the shop over, and over, and over, and....

Thanks for all the info guys Went back and took another look with the input here and it is the 7.3. I pull a fairly good size trailer and this one ran like a charm on a short test drive. The only thing holding me back was to be sure it was the 7.3. Now a proud owner of a 03 f350 lariot, 31000 miles. I will check FAQ first, but sure I'll be back with some more dumb questions. Thanks again for the help/responding , much appreiciated!

Congrats! You will not be disapointed with the 7.3. Be prepared though, once you start modding, you will not stop, its an addiction.

My take on dumb questions has always been - no matter how dumb you think it is, someone else is asking the same question, AND, you really need the answer. It would be much dumber not to ask.

arninetyes - I couldn't agree more. The only dumb question is one that was never asked.

The surest way to tell which engine is to look at the VIN. If there is an "F" in the 8th digit it is a 7.3L. If there is a "5" in the 8th digit it is a 6.0L.
