Hello all I tryed to start my 239 Flathead eng for the frist time this last weekend. It was still on the eng stand just wantted to hear it fire up before I put it in My F-4. Jumped the starter off my YJ-Jeep, but couldnt get the starter to turn eng over more than 1/2 rev. even after I took off gen. belt to free up extra drag. Guess I need new Starter. will a set of brushes be enouph?
If your engine is on a stand, remove the starter then use the jumper cables on it (out of the engine) to see if it does work or if it is binding up. Most rebuilt starters could use the front and rear bushings to keep the armature from shorting out around the field.
If you're using jumper cables you probably don't have a good enough contact. Connections need to be super solid to make it work. Before you spend money on parts you might not need, make up a temporary starting circuit with your battery, cables and a throw switch. Bolt it up tight and see what happens.
Rebuilt engines seldom turn over as fast as they do when broken in. At least in my experence, I have had to push start them at times. like a box of chocolates you never know what your getting.
I'm definitely not a motorhead, but I have to agree on the rebuild issue. My rebuilt 272 with a totally rebuilt starter, new battery cables, new battery, etc. barely turned over right after the rebuild. Once I had an hour or so of run time on it, it cranked over easier. After 5 or so hours run time, it starts just fine.
Well, tryed to start my eng. one more time this weekend.and try to find out why it wont start.
Heres the long story. This eng. 239 flathead was rebuilt by a friend of my brother in law. my brother in law sold me the eng and truck. anyway.the eng. sat around for about two years before I got it.
I took off all the spark plugs and found sevral cyl. had weak compreasion. So I took off the intake manufold and wall-la Grass nuts and sticks packed in the valley.
Now I will take it compleatly apart and clean evarything.
Smart rodent. Guess he could tell nobody was using the engine and must have assumed that brother-in-law had cleaned everything up especially for him. Hope it turns out OK for you.
I called the engine shop today to get an update on my eng. earler when I called 2 weeks ago . I was told the bore just needed a clean up maybe .010in. bore over. Now he says he had to bore .040 over! I did a quick check and found .030 pistions for $250.ouch.

Mark, I have to admit I get confused easily.
You had the engine rebuilt and couldn't get it started on the stand because it had rodent stuff in it, is that right? I'm a little confusd about the new piston thing. Are you having it rebuilt a second time after finding the junk inside?
Earl, I bought this eng from my brother in law. And was told by him that the person he got it from rebuilt it. I thought all I would need to do was clean it up as it sat out of the truck for two years before I got it. I now found out it was never rebuilt the frist time! shop said bore had .035 in taper in them.

Like the old saying goes, you want it done right you have to do it yourself.
If you are bored .40 over, .30 pistons will not help. I am not sure .040 is a standard overbore size, which may make custom built pistons a requirment.
If it hadn't cleaned up a .030, I would have had him go to .060 just so I could use a standard over-bore size piston.
