FE Blocks

Can someone clarify this for me? Are all 352,390 and 428's the same block? I have the casting number of C5AE-A in my block, I know its a 1965 but above that I dont have a clue. How far can these blocks be bored safely?

428's didn't appear until 1966 so it's a 352 or 390 and the blocks is the same except of the bore 4" for 352 and 4.05 for 390. The crank is the big difference, 3.50" stroke for the 352 and 3.78 for the 390.

The C5-A you have is probably a 390. The C5AE-6015-A casting number is on 65 390,427 and 330HD blocks. As Bear mentioned measure the bore. 390's can go .060 normally. Some more some less depending on wall cores and core shift. As far as block castings go there was two basic styles. Of course with some lifter, oil passage and cyl bore differences. The std block casting has two feet or "fingers" on the cranksaddle webbing and the std main casting at the cranksaddle. The HD and HP blocks have the triple webbing or "crows feet" on the cranksaddle webbing and more meat below the main bearing area at the cranksaddle. Once you've seen the two side by side the differences are quite clear. G.
