I dropped my keys yesterday, and just my luck they landed right on the Keyless Entry FOB. For a couple of minutes my FOB wouldn't work at all. Now it works but I have to press the button a couple of times. I've seen new FOBs on Ebay, can I just order the new FOB and program it to my truck, or does a dealer have to do this? I don't even wanna ask the dealer about it until I get some info from a 3rd party.
Just like a flashlight that gets weak, you hit it, it works. The batteries get weak and any resistance at the connections makes the light dim. You bang it, the batteries contact better and it works fine for a little while, then goes out again.
Change the battery first - if it's not the battery, get a new fob and keep the spare battery.
I just traded in my old 97 250 with the keyless entry fobs and had used them lots and original batteries. The same with the truck. Check that some dirt is not holding the switch so it will not work. A very handy option I did not want on my old truck but ordered on my new one. Good luck.
One more thing to try is to make sure the battery is making contact. I have run into that before where the contacts to quite hit the battery. You should be able to bend those to ensure a good contact.
If you need a new key fob, send me an e-mail and I will get you one for the price of postage and a few dollars. I have lots of them (don't ask) rlh6805@wideopenwest.com
