How to tell?

I know this question has probably been asked 100 times, and I've been searching the forums and can't seem to find a sure fire way. I just got a 77 F150 4x4. Owner said engine is a 400, VIN says 351M. Some of his old mechanic receipts say 400 and some say 351M. Is there a sure fire way for me to tell without disassembling the engine and looking for cast numbers? Any input would be great. Thanks a lot.

There is no way to tell without either measuring the stroke or looking at the casting numbers on the crank.

Except for the crank and pistons the parts would be the same anyway.

You can measure the stroke through a spark plug hole. A 351M will measure 3.5", and a 400 will measure 4".
