95 460 performance

I am looking at getting a 95 f-250 5 speed with the 460 in it and was wondering about what are the performance upgrades for this truck? The only headers I could find are hooker and they are 600 bucks, I quess the chip is non removable so I don't know about that.

Also how is the performance of these motors stock?

I have a '94 F250 460/E4od 4x4. You can install the 1100 series Superchip and receive excellent results. I have installed the FIPK, Chip, and B&M shift kit. I have a transcool transmission fluid cooler as well. Currently I am 53 miles away from 250,000 on the clock. The ZF 5 speed should be a little better on mileage, but that should not be a major consideration if you need the hp and torque of a 460 in a full sized truck. You can get shorty headers from Gibson as well and run a high flow cat back system. I wouldn't recommend true duals as you will want the maximum torque available. If you do balance the system with intake improvement like a BBK throttle body, a chip, and maybe an Eidlebrock "torquer" cam, duals would be in order with a balance tube. The 460 is a real workhorse. I hauled 50 4x4-12 pressure treated posts last week for a Boy Scout project and it didn't even sit on the helper pads. Just rode smoother. I haul a Featherlite 3-horse slant gooseneck with no trouble fully loaded. Just make sure that you balance your improvements so as not to have an exhaust that "over" scavenges robbing you of torque without improvement on the front end of the chain. Enjoy the truck.

Thanks for the ideas Tex! I have a '97 F250 w/177K on the clock. Replacing the ball joints today as well as rear wheel seal and spring bushings and slip yoke. I am new to this truck, seems it pulled a goose neck for most of it's life and it runs well so far. I was concerned about the mileage (I am getting 10 mpg around town) until I spoke with my mech who said I am doing fine at that, he said his F150 gets about 13 so I should feel pretty good! Next is cat back exhaust and maybe the chip you reccommend.
These trucks seem to be pretty much bullet proof (I hope) since this will be our house truck and my son's first vehicle I needed something that will take hitting a ditch or two in the winter without falling apart.

The only drawback with the chip is that I have to run 93 octane gas. My company provides fuel for me as a sales rep, so it's not much of a consideration for me, but can be if you're paying for it. If you just maintain them they go on and on. Mine turned 250,000 today. No issues, no problems. Run a can of Seafoam through it. I noticed about a mile per gallon jump with that and no other changes. With the chip you can keep your foot off the throttle so much and if it's an auto the shift kit pays off as well. Good luck.

Just went and test drove it today, had a serious vibration at about 70-75 and the 460 didn't seem to run real hard compared to my mild 400 in my 79. Felt like the rev limiter kicked in too early or something. When starting out if you laid into the throttle it wouldn't do any thing just baaaa. So my search continues.

Too bad you had a bad experience because these are excelent trucks/engines. The vibration could be as simple as a u-joint or tires out of balance. As for the performance, these engines seem to fall off the powerband after 3,000-3,500rpms in stock trim, but produce a ton of torque arround 2500rpms. Unless you were taking it up to 5500rpms you weren't hitting the rev limiter. I only have a few power mods on my EFI 460 (K&N filter, intake half of Banks stinger kit, 3" exhaust w/ flowmaster 40 series) but up to about 50mph it'll really lay you back, often times breaking the tires loose when I grab second. I have driven numerous 'feable 400's' as I call them (no offense to anyone), and they don't feel like they have near the power of a 460, becasue they don't. Sounds like the truck wasn't running well or wasn't in generally good condition, so probably better off you passed on it, IDK.
