When I started my 2000 PSD at the store today (140K), I could smell burning oil!!!!! First, I could see the black smoke when I was in reverse, BARELY touching the accelerator pedal. Then I could smell the oil, so I knew it was from my truck. I changed the oil about a week ago with an FL-1995 Fomoco filter and 16 qts. of Rotella T motor oil. The truck doesn't seem to be burning a lot of it, and there isn't any really dark smoke when I'm doing regular driving. The truck doesn't pull or haul heavy loads either. I really hope this isn't too serious (or expensive) Somebody please help me!!!! What's wrong with my truck??
You might have had an injector O-ring go bad on you, allowing engine oil into the fuel system. I'd check your oil level and see if you're way low on oil.
Just checked the oil level and it is normal. Are there any other potential causes? The truck does use 16 quarts right? Oh, and when I got home after going to the store, I did not smell any oil coming from the exhaust. So far, it doesn't seem to be very bad. I'm no mechanic, so what should I do? Dealership?
Tail pipe seems fine. The truck doesn't smoke at all. Actually, it did just once but not a lot. Off start up I can smell burt oil faintly. And when I'm moving in reverse with the wind heading toward me. Sometimes there's no oil smell at all at idle or after driving it. So tell me gentlemen, what are some more possibilities for problems? A few $$ figures for repair would be VERY appreciated. Thanks guys for all the assistance!!!
I'd check the valley on top of the engine, to see if there's any oil there. You might have something quite simple to fix causing your problem. After checking that, get back to us, and we'll take a stab at it.
Ok, I looked in what I thought was the valley (area on the block under the fuel filter). There is a little oil there, however, it looks like old oil. I just drove up town to fuel it up. Haven't seen any smoke, nor have I smelled anything. Weird. Could the truck just have been burning off excess oil or something? I did dump some injector cleaner in the tank when I filled it up tonight, but that's irrelevant...
hey dd... i could be wrong to, but my 7.3 diesel supplement in the owners manual, and the chilton's manual that i have both say 15 qts for the 7.3, that includes the 2 qts that go in the filter... i have always put that in my mule, you can get mobil 1 syn in 5 qt containers which is nice because you just put 3 of these in when you cange the oil.. no mus no fus...
i was taught a little underfull is better than a little overfull... less pressure on the main seals and such... i don't know if that's true or not, but i've heard that repeated all my life...
I suppose it could be drawing excessive oil through the crankcase vent system. I know that many people say there PSDs use a little oil, and mine did also (about 1 quart every 2500 miles) until I installed the CCV mod. Since then my oil usage has dropped to basically zero, so apparently all the oil it used was being drawn through the vent system. The filter I installed on the end of the hose under the truck is a little oily, but it doesn't drip from it when the truck is parked, so I'm happy.
