well my truck is kind of weird/pissing me off. It will start sometimes, not as of late, or it will just turn the starter over and its not turning the motor over. so I turned it by hand a few times and one time it finally caught, then my buddie stalled it and we had to get a tow to pop it. So is my starter hooped or what?
Sounds to me like you have stripped a couple of teeth off the flywheel ring grear or the flexplate. It starts ok when good teeth are in front of the starter. But when the stripped teeth are in front of the starter there is nothing to engage so the starter just spins. The problem would be random depending on where the engine stopped. The reall tell-tale here is when you said you were able to rotate the crank shaft some and the starter engaged.
have it tested first, if its good then you know its the flywheel....hopefully it IS just the starter, thats alot easier than pulling a tranny to replace a flywheel!!!
there should be an inspection plate that you can remove to view the flexplate if it has an automatic. i am not sure if the manual tranny setup has these plates. if not, take the starter out and you can see the flywheel teeth. just turn the motor by hand a little at a time, make a mark on the flywheel so you know where you started. i hope your problem is the starter.....Eddie II

Sounds like your bendix isn't engaging with your flywheel. Pull your starter and try it on a bench. If you see worn gears or the bendix doesn't engage fully it's time for a new starter.
Hope this helps.
PS: While you have the starter off inspect the flywheel. That could also be part of your problem.
