I have been going through your forum for a couple hours and you guys really seem to know your stuff. Hopefully you can help me in the right direction. 88 bronco 2, 2.9efi, auto, 120,000 miles, from nys. Bronco2 has an ever decreesing range of drivability. Starts now to lose engine power after about 4 miles. It doesnt stall much but just sort of dies out unless you give it a little gas, then it kicks in and goes for 20 seconds then dies out again. If I let it sit for a while it runs fine again. I get the black smoke others mentioned and MPG drops to about 1 mpg. However it doesnt usually stall and will always start. I am doubting fuel system problem just because of the fuel efficiency drop. It acts a lot like a bad cap but that and wires and coil was replaced. I had a similar problem that was resolved by replacing Alt and Bat. Could a defective Alt/Bat cause this even though they are new and passed a check at autozone? Would you agree it sounds electrical? suggestions?
I would start by pulling the codes (see the link on pulling eec-iv codes in the tech info thread at the top of this forum), testing the fuel pressure and checking for a bad FPR. The FPR is on the drives fuel rail, run the truck for a few minutes, shut it down, pull the vacuum line and check for gas, gas=bad.
