I broke the twin tractor beam part that covers the front differential on my 1989 F150, and am currently having no luck finding one at my local wrecking yards.
Can anyone tell me the proper name for this part? I can't find an exploded view anywhere on the Internet.
Is twin-tractor beam the correct term, or is it twin I beam?
Has anyone else ever broken this piece? Seems like it should last the life of the truck, but mine is cracked on both sides and ready to snap. I wondered why the truck pulled drastically to the left when I touched the brakes.
I do use the truck for snow plowing, which is probably the culprit. I think it's time for an F 250 - maybe a three-quarter ton is made stronger in the front end.
The correct name for this type of front end is Twin Traction Beam. But anybody should know what you are talking about once you describe your problem. You didn't say what exactly broke. Is it possible to weld the break. You could then get an alignment to set things straight. I've never heard of one breaking, but I guess they do, right. Getting a F-250 or 350 would be ood idea though. I did a little plowing when I lived up north and it is really rough on a truck. I would think a 150 would be a little light for the job. Good luck.
i've seen 2 or 3 of them break around here. usually on very rusty trucks, and always on ones with snow plows. they break just outside the leaf spring. we have welded them on trucks that see very limited road use ( only to go for a tank of gas).
Thanks, I found a new one at Jeff's Bronco Graveyard for $150, but by the time I pay shipping and account for the difference in the Canadian dollar I will probably be up around the $300 mark.
Mine is not weldable, as it is ready to snap right off. What a lousy suspension system to put on a truck.
