hello i have a 600 cfm carb on my 81 f100 with a 300. i just put it on with a clifford intake and efi headers. the problem is that it won't idle down wven with the idle set screw backed all the way. i can push the throttle a little and it will disengage the choke if i put the choke open and then it will die if i don't give it gas. the only way it will idle down is if i pushed the throttle in the closed direction which it is already all the way down), i gotta push it hard to do it. is this a powervalve. i have no idea. anybody ever experience this before.
Are both throttle plates centered in their bores when the throttle is fully closed on both primary and secondaries. Did you check the throttle plates on the secondary side to see if they were fully closed when against the grub screw is on the bottom of the carb once the carbs removed and turned upside down? Check for vacuum leaks around the carb base as well as all vacuum lines. If power brakes pinch off the hose to see if idle changes, if yes the booster hose or booster leaks. Is the dizzy hooked up to manifold instead of ported vacuum?
no leaks, no power brakes and i have the distributor hooked to the timed port on the carb. i didn't take it off yet but they were both closed all the way except for one side when i pulled the choke back and tapped the throttle, it closed all the way and died.
It sounds like your choke is not opening correctly, since when you manually open the choke it will then idle down. You mention one side was not closed until you pulled the choke back, do you mean one of the bores in the primary? or the primary or secondary pair of plates were not closed?
What is the list number of the carb and what type of choke operation(manual, electric or hot air) is it?
The idle speed screw usually sits at about 1 to 1 1/2 turns after contact with the throttle linkage.
Is the carb new or rebuilt or used?? If it is used or rebuilt you might need to put a kit in it. If new there could be a problem from the factory, it is not common, but it does happen.
You need to check your float setting and needle/seat for leakage, and then replace the power valve if the float setting checks OK.
