On my truck, on the passenger side, the radius arm bushing closest to the front of the truck is about a 1/4 of an inch away from the frame mounted bracket. On the driver side it is tight. Is the bushing worn out? Both sides have equal threads showing on the radius arms after the nut. Can I just tighten the nut?
Nope bushing is toast, its a cheap part to replace.
Easiest way to change it to take the nut off (you need a 1 1/8" deep socket), then by using a cumalong hook to something solid (be sure to take the top spring retainer off as well as one of the shock bolts), using the cumalong, bring the ibeam and radius arm forward (you just need enough to slip the bushing in there), then once its on properly let the cumalong loose, reattach the shock and spring, and zip the radius arm nut on there, you will need an impact, and tighten till she stops turning.
Another way to do it is to support the radius arm with a jackstand, take a grinder (if you have one), and grind off the factory rivet heads. You can then punch out the rest of the rivet, replace the bushings and use grade 8 nuts and bolts to re-attach the raius arm to the frame. If you go this route, use lock washers and some loctite and they should stay put, been there, done that.
