I have a '74 F100 w/and auto , 360 , 4x4 . I was going off roading
a while back and I came down really hard on the front end of the truck
about 30 minutes later by the time I was rolling into town ,the transfercase
started slipping (bad) Now the trunk wont run in any forwards gear
The 4x4r is full time and the truck runs good in reverse, when the transfercase slipps it makes a loud scrapping and thumping noise. My truck has a c6
transmission and I belive a 205 transfercase! Id be grateful for any feed back
The transfer case in these units are all gear to tear or gear to chain, they don't slip. If you were off roading and in 4 wheel drive I suspect you've damaged your C-6. Now that will slip.
not true, the full time NP203(205 is part time) is chain driven, and when those chains stretch or the teeth wear off the drive gears they can slip, i know this because my 78 F-250 full time 4x4 slips under heavy load, its not a slip like a tranny slips, its a loud banging, clunking noise....my chain is stretched because the previous owner, and myself, had no idea how the full time units worked, i thought the tires hopping and bucking around corners was normal, turned out i didnt know that you cant drive on pavement in the "lock" postition, and needless to say it done its share of damage...the NP203s are good units when working right, and they have a lower low range than their part time counter parts....you can pretty much buy another one at salvage for the price and hassle of rebuilding yours, although the rebuild can be done.....personally im buying a NP205 and twin sticking it for now, and then rebuilding my 203 to make a doubler, then ill have a triple stick!!.......
