I just purchased the SCMT and about it install it, but I was wonder if I should wait. I have less than 6,000 miles on my 2004 6.0. Do you guys think it is to soon to install the SCMT? If so how long should I wait?
I installed it yesterday on the lowest setting. I noticed a difference. I really like it!! I just needed a little more power when I was pulling my trailer. I think I will slowly work up to the other settings.
I would like to boost my PSD as well. The owners manual and sticker under the hood both threaten that the computer can track for mods. This has made me quite apprenhensive.
I've read here that disconnecting the batteries can clear codes but when I shut off my PC, it still has 'memory'. Any thoughts?
My truck has great power but it's hard for an old hot-rodder to leave it alone...
I use the Superchips mdl 1805 on my 05 6.0 DRW and find it makes a big difference.
Only concern is I have had a overheat problem, Dealer could not duplicate of course !!
At 20K I'm about to dump the anti-freeze and change the thermostat.
Anyone else had a like problem ??
i got the superchips before i got my truck actually. Ran the truck for about 150 miles then loaded the tuner on economy till about 2000 miles, Been running the hi performance for the last 14000 miles. Truck is an 05 and no problems yet, and i run the truck quite hard when i do drive it
I have a 2004 6.0 and have no problems thus far with 72K on it. I have been considering a programmer to boost mileage. I have have no real desire to take it to the track just want to keep a good running truck in tact. I have been told most have troubles eventually once putting a programmer to the truck. My question is for those with programmers but choose to drive the truck reasonably and like your still paying for the truck. I would like to hear from those folks with programmers and no problems with the truck. At least no problems that wer'nt already problems.

That is a tricky question to answer. Most people make the connection of tuners causing head problems by the simple fact "I put the tuner on my truck and then I had blown heads". Now the tuner could have caused it, but the tuner could have also just brought it to your attention and you already had head problems. Typically the ones that don't know are the ones that bought this rigs for just daily drivers and don't put loads on it to stress the engine to see if everything is in working order(this isn't 100%, just from my own observations it seems to be the most often observed, but not the only observation). Heads and the TTY bolts are the biggest weak point of the engine and because of that you run the risk of blown heads rather or not you put a tuner on it, I have heard that the detuned International trucks that used the 6.0 engine have had head problems, so that tells me it's more of a design issue then just as simple as saying the tuner did it.
As to tuners, they can cause the problem depending on how the tuner makes that extra power. Most of your common off the shelf tuners make power by increasing cyclinder pressures, not good. You run a good chance of head problems rather caused by the tuner or brought to your attention of an existing head problem by the tuner. Most would suggest custom tunes as they have a lower incidence of head problems and plus you can change items on the programming and still not affect hp/tq numbers if you so choose and make it more efficient and hopefully pick up more mpgs as well. Since you have 72k on the clock and no problems(that have shown themselves at this time) and you want to do a tuner, I would do one with custom tunes even if you take out the fact that they can do tuning that matches your driving style better, it's just safer(not totally without risks mind you, just less) then the regular pre-fab tuners out there
However, do not get the tuner just for the mpgs, even in today's fuel inflated times, it will still take awhile to pay off with the tuner, get it because you want a truck that matches your driving habits and is more of a pleasure to drive then it was in stock form(atleast it was for me).
Thanks for taking the time to answer. I have resisited a tuner because overall I like the performance of the truck. I do not do a lot of towing but maybe every other monthish I move 15K on a gooseneck for planting food plots or helping a neighbor out and I have a 7500 lbs travel trailer that goes as well when we can. I hear you on the tuner cost recovery but I love the truck and would like to drive the wheels off of it so to speak over the next 2 decades. I am planning on doing the head studs if I do have a problem and at that time evaluate any other beneficial after market mods so as to meet my goal of 20+ years of service. I will do some research on custom tuners and put more thought into it. Again thanks for the reply its why I love this site.
