Carb options?

I have a 66 with 352, and a 2brl Autolite. The truck starts on the first or second try, even after sitting a few months, it will start cold and hot, and runs just fine.

On the other hand, it leaks around the throttle shaft bad enough that the idle can't be turned below 800rpm because it leaks too much air. Its also missing the bowl float valve set up and will spill gas out that hole if I stop hard. Some of the springs are hand made out of paper clips, and the throttle return spring doesn't work because that side of the workings are corroded to the point of nearly being jammed, so a clutch return spring has been jurry rigged to it.

Yes, it works fine. 12 mpg, good power and response, ect, But Its a problem waiting to happen.

What are my choices for a new carb?

66, your the first guy I have run across that had a good working autolite carb...lol..

If I were you...I would check with Lyle ,in the Holley carb section on ebay...and see what he has thats rebuilt...Lyle is a good guy to work with, and does a better rebuld job than the factory.... all base plate's are milled and squared..all metering blocks and float bowls are milled for flatness..and he uses reuseable gaskets in his rebuilds..

He Built 2 Holley 850's for me...and they look better than new.. I traded in 2 holley 600crm carbs that were junk..but the base plate's were good (not Cracked) he gave me $200 on trade for the old Carbs..and I got the 2 850's back for $500

His rebuilds cant be beat that I know of..and his prices are Great!!

JMHO....

If you Deal with him..tell him Russ Sanborn or Paul Kane sent ya!!

Good Luck!!

Russ

Making a Autolite run well is pretty much like making a Holley run well, since the Autolite is a copy of the Holley with enough movement of the parts to keep Ford from being sued. A junk yard Autolite of a Holley 2 barrel with the shaft checked for tightness and a rebuild kit will work if you have basic mechanical skills, cheap too. Find a carb that has been covered and not unprotected from the rain. Make sure all the parts are there and everything moves.

My old autolite worked okay, excpet for the gas leak it had. The hissing noise is just a chactheristic of the autolite, mine hissed all the time, the new Holley does not hiss. Upgrade to holley, much better.
