My 85 F150, 351W, C6, 4x4 is having a stalling problem right after startup. It will start fine, then stumble and fall off. It will do this a couple times, and I have to rev it pretty high to keep it from stalling. Then, after I think I have it ok, when I drop it in gear it will stall again. Tonight it took about fifteen starts to get it going. The thing is once it's in drive and she's really moving it's fine for the rest of the day. I know all this starting is bad for the starter, battery, and probably other parts as well. Does anyone know what could cause this? The alternator is new, as is the battery. Please help, I don't want to cause more problems than she already has.
I'm guessing you must have a carb. Check the choke. It may need to be re-set or re-built. Make sure you have the heat riser to the choke from the manifold. Also, you may want to check for vacuum leaks (especially bad vacuum hoses).
I had the same problem with my '83 F100 302 2V. It would start OK then drop off and would not fast idle... just seemed to act like it was flooded. Turned out to be the choke pull back module. What it does is pull the choke off slightly immediately after the vehicle starts thus providing more air and prevent stalling. It is vacum operated and the diaphram in the module eventually gets a hole in it and stops working. I hope that helps.
Thanks for the help guys, the sad thing is that I just had the choke replace three weeks ago. Before that I was getting 5mpg, and the exhaust was real rich. Last gas tank got about 8mpg(still not the 10mpg she was getting last summer, but she also didn't have 33" mudders then either), but now this stalling problem is starting to get real bad. At first it would stall once when put into gear, and then be fine for the rest of the day. Now it stalls more than ten times before it's ready to go, worse in reverse than forward. Will the constant restarting cause any serious harm?
Found the problem. The linkage to the choke butterfly had come out of the plastic retainer, and so the butterfly was just wide open. Once I reattached the linkage she started up fine, drove great. Thanks for the help guys.
