i got a 67 f100, and I recently put the 3speed shifter on the floor, ran fine, but just moved it to my new house to finish off the restoration. i hadnt run it for about a month, becuase i needed a new starter, which Is now in. the 390 runs great, and the it shifts smoothly with the truck off... but then with it on, when i push the clutch in and then try to shift, it just is like shifting without a clutch, it stalls. It was working fine before, i just dont know what could cause it just to stop working, the only thing i have done to the truck is put new starter in, some engine mods, headers, new front coils, (4" lift ). the back is not yet lifted, the lift parts for the back are in the mail.
Sounds like the pilot bushing could be hosed, causing the tranny to spin even with the clutch depressed. Or...the clutch is out of adjustment and isn't releasing.
another test would be to put it in gear (in a safe area where you won't run over anything by accident) and hit the starter. If the truck lurches, the clutch is obviously either not disengaging or the pilot bushing is really gone. Not having looked at the manual clutch on my F100, I can't say, but the clutch lever (on the bellhousing) might have an adjustable pivot with a jamb nut on it.
Yeah. Just went and looked. The clutch linkage has an adjustment sleeve on it. You should be able to find it easily. It directly pushes on the clutch throwout lever.
I've broken the throw out arm before. It cracked right at the pivot spot. Maybe make sure that it's ok. Have someone push on pedal and you look to make sure throwout is moving with it.
Clutch may have gone south, but make sure linkage is working properly first.
i found the problem, after locating the clutch linkage. i found that the clutch was not pushing in all the way becuase the flange on my new headers was stopping it before the clutch could be pushed in all the way. i did some grinding on it, and i also adjusted it, an it works perfect now. thanks for the help.
Been there too. I've had to remove the flange and weld a slip type coupler onto pipe to get flange out of the way. It's a pretty typical problem that has had other people scratching their heads.
