251,000 miles on a 5.4

My wifes 99E-250 just hit this and its still running great, average of 80 + a year since we have bought it with 90k a little over 2 years ago

my question is we are thinking of keeping it since the used van market prices have soared and will probaly put another 150k + onit . Does any one know how hard it would be to do the timing chain?

is it similer to the old block style? like the 5.0's 5.8's etc etc..

Congrats on your terrific milestone!

Being an OHC engine, the timing chains (there are two) aren't exactly like the old engines. There'll be a little more work & expense involved. Suggest you get a decent repair manual if you're going to do this yourself.

What has been done to the motor other than normal maintainence? What is your oil change interval and what oil do you use? That's an awsome milestone, congrats!

She say's Thanks...and she gets the oil changed about every 6000 miles or so and uses about a quart every 3000 miles , she uses valvoline oil.

she a courier driver with a 50-50 mix of city/highway driving, a ton of stop & go ...the only things that has been done to the engine is one heater core and cleaned the maf sensors or a rough idle condition, and no we have not changed the plugs as of yet but it does look like one of the cops has been replaced before we got it , we have done brakes three X, 1 set of ball joints, several sets of shocks{ gotta love life time warrenties}.

As to loads, any where from empty to 3300 lbs on any given day.

My SD 5.4 gets the same treatment and at 108K so far no issues,I average about 60k plus a year. The wife and me run pretty hard...

I did talk to a mechanic and he said usually the oil pressure will drop before a timing chain will let go, which means we are just gonna keep runnin it till it goes south on her.

Hmmmm I bet this has gotta put a damper in the Diesal boy's arguement that gasser's don't hold up under punishment..LOL

once again thanks guy's for your responses

Deja vu

I thought I was reading about my truck!! A 1999 F250SD, 5.4 with 251,000 miles (turned 252,000 over the weekend). I abuse it terribly and don't change the oil anywhere as often as I should. Trans went at 114,000 miles. Transfer case went bad at 240,000 (shift-on-the-fly). replaced the alternator last week (second one) Also replaced the front springs and sway bar bushings at 240,000. I do 70/30 highway/city, carrying varying loads about half the time.

I don't know how much longer it'll last but my next vehicle will be a super-duty regardless.
