Hard shifting

I have an 84 F150 4x4 with 300 I6 and 4spd tranny with granny gear. While sitting still, I can easily move the shifter in and out of every gear. While driving, it is very herd to fid the gears and shift into them. What could the problem be? Thanks

That cast iron trans is naturally hard to shift. I know because I have one in my 88 F150. This trans. isn't fully synchronized like an aluminum so you will always have to push hard on the shifter until it gets into gear. Besides that, you may have pressure plate problems or the bottom of the shift lever is wore out.

its not so much hard to get into gear as its is to find the gear when moving.

Hard to fine the holes sounds to me like a high mileage tranny that's pretty well worn out.
