Was coming to a stop at a light today and the front end started jumping all over....felt like the tires were shaking/wobbling. Steering wheel was shaking too. When I'd slowed down under 40mph it all stopped. Didn't happen the rest of the day. This is the best way i can describe it. Rims arent bent.....tires are balanced. (I had just left Discount Tire) Would a worn steering stabilizer cause this?? (its a Rancho from the late 80's). I had new ball joints/ king pins put in 3yrs ago. Haven't had it off road much, so its fairly new. This problem has been around for awhile....usually the steering wheel shimmies, front end rattles, then it stops. But todays episode was BAD!!! Anyone experience this with their truck??
Ahh, the famous death wobble...LoL
Most common things I have come across is the track bar bushings or track bar bolt in the axle housing. Next I would check the C bushings and radius arm bushings.
Hmmm...track bar bolt could be worn.....but all my bushings are urethane. Good ol Rancho!! I'll have to check the bolt to see if its tight. Other than what you've mentioned I can't think of what would cause the Death Wobble Maybe I've been mislead about Rancho products....but I thought they were suppose to be good for along time. Maybe I'm pushing the limits of service!!!! Any more thoughts and suggestions are more than welcome.
