Hey guys, help me solve this one please!
My 88 F150 351W is running too hot. It just started yesterday, out of the blue. The water pump is about 1month old, I just replaced the thermostat with an official Ford one, after replacing three STANT ones. I don;t think anything is wrong with the radiator. I don't want to replace the waterpump again, but I guess I might. Any suggestions as to what could cause it to run too hot? It is usually bellow the N in normal, but the past few days it has been on the N and O. Im kinda scared to drive it like this. Thanks!
One more thing, when it gets too hot, I turn it off and let it sit for 5min. Then I start it, and the temp. gauage goes down to where it should be, then in less then 1min. it is back again. It feels like the system is pressurized after sitting, and then the engine starts and the hoses feel less pressurized. Im not blowing any smoke, and Im not losing fluids of any kind. Its just bloody running TOO hot!
Please help me before I lose what's left of my mind!
Thank You!
If the gauge is still in the "NORMAL" range, you should have nothing to worry about. Your new 'stat may be causing the slight increase in temp (their not rocket science). If your still worried, install a mechanical gauge and sender and check "actual" temp. 180-230 deg should be normal.
Not to ignore the simple things but.... Did you bleed the air out of the radiator?
By running the engine with the cap off and fillign er up!
This usually causes erratic temp gauge jumping though...
Others are right though, new stat may perform a little differently. As long as you see the water "moving" in the radiator and the therm seems to be opening you should be okay.
Katt ,
Burping all the air out is important . Make sure the fan clutch is working properly also . It should start to lock up at about 200 Deg . Make sure the radiator is free of bugs and debris . It doesnt hurt to backflush the radiator with a garden hose . Check to make sure the timing is correct as well .

Thanks for all the help everyone! The new stat has a hole to bleed the air, and I did run it without the cap for a long time. Fan clutch is 1yr old. I decided to replace the pump again, its under waranty. I'll finish it in the morning and see if it starts to cool down like normal. I'll backflush the radiator and entire system.
Thanks again!
