Just in case anyone is interested, I fabricated my own cold air system for my 05 4.6L XLT. The pictures are posted in the gallery section. I'm on a limited budget and for a cost of about $25.00 in parts this sytem works very well. I have noticed alot better throttle response and mileage and an increase in torque. I would like to hear any comments or suggestions. Thanks!
That is a pretty sweet job you did there!! The best part about it that I like is it doesn't look like a "hack" job! I am thinking I may just do that before my trip down south this weekend.

Very clean, neat, pro looking job on both the work and the photo story.
It's time to drop the other shoe now-
Just how much of an mpg increase have you achieved?
Also- Has there been any noise factor to consider after your change, (air sucking sound)?
Thanks for sharing your work.
Earth to 4x4twinkie- have you missed some medication? Your post/pictures have zero to do with the thread topic. You traded your truck for a Taurus!
wow, reminds me of when I had my Prelude. I did the same thing, but elimintatd the VTEC housing and ran cool air from the bottom of the bumper. worked pretty good, sounded better than it worked though. I dont know wether it was the year of street racing, the intake mods, or the exhaust, but I really trashed that car. When I traded it for my wide-butt chevy, it was getting about 10 mpg, the clutch was slipping, and 3rd and rev were stiff to shift. Of course, my womans mustang has the same tranny probs.
Desert Bound...I tried to send him the links of those pics in a private message but it would not work since I have less then 25 posts. So I just included in his post. I wanted to show him what elese he couls do to his truck too
kywildcat.... the metal mesh you see in those pics is gutter guard. Regular ol gutter guard that you put in your gutters. Its the stiffer kind though...not the kind that comes in a roll. They come in 2 foot sheets and they are in a package. I also painted the gutter guard so the weather wouldnt beat it too much.
KenB.....I kinda had to trade my sho in.Ever since I dynoed it it started knocking on start up after it was sitting for a while and it was blowing white smoke. It also had cam failure issues as well. So, instead of trying to fix a problem that would cost me twice as much as the car was worth I just traded it in while it was still running.
4X4 twinkiwe I gotta admit that is a pretty cool idea for your grill and probably a lot cheaper than buying a speed grill
I actually have done it on all my vehicles because its a good way of keeping the bugs out of the radiator and trans cooler area. In Michigan, I live in the boonies and there are ALOT of bugs in the summer...big ones and they can put a hurtin on the radiator and trans cooler. So, not only is it effective, but it also looks good. It cost around 12.00 for the pack of gutter guard. Or you can pay 5.00 for the roll of gutter guard but it doesnt last as long as the stiffer stuff that you see in the picture.
There is no air sucking noise that I can hear...didn't really change much. But then again with the flowmaster exhaust who could really tell anyway. Mileage very's because I have a hard time keeping my foot out of it. I was averaging about 15 mpg before and am now averaging about 16.5 to 17.5 mpg. I plan on replacing the intake tube also. I'm not gonna pay what the aftermarket guy's charge for one....I'm gonna make my own. I think a piece of 3" or 4", 90 degree section of PVC or somthing similar wraped in thermal tape should do the trick. I'll post the pic's when I get it done. I also made a change to ensure better airflow. The directions for what I changed are posted in my gallery if you want to take a look! I'll put the pic's here also.
