Column shift woes
I have a 1974 Ford F-100, 4x2, 302. My column shifter has a mind of it's own. You can shift it into any gear without pulling it towards you. This is a problem. I'm forced to park it in N and use the emer. brake. If I take a corner to fast it shifts into 2. Does anyone know what part I may need to fix this shifter problem, and how to do it? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check your cab mounts, a common problem. A broken motor or transmission mount can also cause problems. Sometimes worn parts in the shift linkage can cause problems but yours seem to be movement related so check the mounts.

Yes, I checked my cab mount and it is rusted out. Thanks. That solves one problem. I will have to check the sector next. The shifter still goes left and right into gears without much resistance. Thank you.
