I have a 2001 F250 SD, XL trim. It has the sealed beam headlights, which I would like to upgrade to the streamlined style. Is the a difficult job ? If it could be done, would I need to replace the wiring, or would it plug right in ? Thanks in advance for any insight.
Dont know about the stream lines, but I did the H4 bulb style that has the same plug connectionas sealed beam conversion.
Same shape as the seald beams but the front lens is clear. They look real good and work aheck of a lot better. And if you want you can run higher wattage bulbs or the fake HID's.
I have the XL selaed beams on my 04.
I went to procarparts.com and bought the latest jewel type found on the higher model SD's.
They have a few kits and i think start around $180.
I went with the headlights, clear\white side lights and upgraded bulbs for about $240.
Then went to jegs.com and bought the upgraded headlight wiring harness for $30.
The upgraded bulbs were HID looking bulbs. In hindsight they are too blue and i would reccomend a whiter bulb like the sylvania silverstars or whatever they offer these days.
I just changed mine from Xl sealed beam to after market jewel type. You have to take of adapter on wires and then it plugs right into the new ones. $103.00 plus $20.00 shipping at Performance Depot on Ebay. They look great.
Total exspense was $60. I got mine at a truck store called "6 States". I did spend $10 more and got 80/110 watt replacement bulbs. There is no moding to be done they mount the same way the seald beams do and adjust the same also.
I called the local Ford dealer yesterday and told the parts man that I wanted to upgrade from XL sealed beams to the newer style and get OEM parts. He told me that it couldn't be done. I'll check out the sites that you guys have mentioned. Thanks for the help. The dealer has been been difficult in this and also when I called to try to order x code front springs, in which case they told me that there were only two types..regular and heavy duty, when I know that there are at least six different ratings. Getting back to the headlights...if I understand what you have said, all that I have to do is remove the outside plastic housing and the headlight, replace with the aftermarket light, adjust it, and get a plug adaptor. Is that it?
Your dealer does not know what he is talking about. Two screws on the bottom of the corner lights and they snap out, just let them hang there. Then you remove plastic surround, four screws. Then you remove actual headlight, two screws and a retaining spring. New unit snaps into header panel at three locations different than old sealed beam adjusting screw oriented up. You have to remove existing adapter leaving you with plug that fits new headlights. Website I gave you before is the cheapest I found for the jewel effect headlights some call them composites.
