Went to store and came out, and would not start. No early warning sign or anything, Cranks fine but would'nt start $300. DOLLARS LATER (Bad Cam Position Sensor) Ford said It was the #1 Problem with the 7.3 PSD
$300!!! For a cam sensor? I suggest you pick up a spare from the nearest International dealer. It runs right around $100 most places, and installation is a 10 minute job.
rackpatrol, my cps went out on me testerday, driving on my way home and it just died. and whould not restart. so as I was cranking it over I noticed that the tach, was not moving at all like it should. so ai went to napa auto parts and picked up one. they are easy to change, all you need is a 10mm socket 6point 2in. extenion and a screwdriver flat blade. its located just to the left side of damper and up about 10 o-clock position. you will see a metal object looking like a timing mark sticking out and the 10mm bolt is just above it. there is a plastic clip connected to it. just remove the clip, then take out 10mm bolt then use screwdriver and gently pry and wiggle out the cps sensor. to in stall new one put small amount of oil on o-ring and reinstall and its done. hope this helps you next time. 01psd
What's the average life of a cps? I've got '99 7.3L PSD and it didn't go out until a couple months ago at 108,000 miles. But I read about it here all the time and realize it is common and many carry a spare cps. What makes these things so unpredictable and failure prone?
scole250, hi hey thats a good question I really dont think there is an answer to that . some have gone over 2 hundred thousand miles and some alot sooner. it might be a quality control issue. inferior material. just dont know for sure. but it sure happens all to often, and one is smart to keep a spare in there truck. ordering my spare tonight. 01psd
I had the same problem today, driving down the road with the kids and engine died. Just bought my '03 Excursion used last week, still under warranty so Ford paid for towing and cps replacement. I think I will get a spare to carry with me, seems like good insurance if I could get one for around $100. Problems like this are no fun in the middle of the night, especially when towing a travel trailer.
hink10. hi go to this site for a good price on cps sensor .www.powerstrokeshop.com, thats the best price I found. didnt have a spare cps in my truck.and it cost me $155.00 at napa auto. ordered me a spare from them tonight. thanks 01psd
Thanks for the help. Sounds like a good Idea to look at the tach. But at that time I would'nt have known what it would have been trying to tell me. THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS.
