I'm installing the CPP disc conversion on my truck. The adapter plate which mounts on the spindle is mounted behind the spindle. To do this, the instructions say to remove the zerk fitting on the king pin and relocate it to another position where it won't interfere with the brackets. I was wondering if anyone else did this conversion and if they used a different method otherthan than redrilling and taping a new zerk fitting? Is this common with other conversion kits?
I just did the drill and tap this weekend and it went real smooth. Just turning the original zerk fitting does not give you enough clearance. The instructions are correct; when you hit the kingpin you will know it as the kingpin is hardened. Then just pump grease from the original hole to clean out any metal chips. Use sharp drills and a good tap.
Now, how about some advise on how to get the bearing adapters onto the spindle.
John, to get the bearing adapters onto the spindle. Place the adapter in the oven and set it for 450 degrees. Let it get good and hot and while it's still hot. Slide it on. You'll have a tough time getting it on when it's cold. I heard that was the most difficult part to do. Good luck.
Lowr, I used some angled zerks that ended up giving me the clearance. There is a 90 or 45 degree bend in them. Can't remember the degree of bend. Can look again if you want? I also reversed the locking bolts for the King pins for clearance.
Looks like we are on the same path. I used the ECI disc kit. Are you doing the Toyota box? I made my own bracket and am now making the bracket for the Mustang II 7" booster to stock pedal.
Kevin- I tried the 45 fittings and it already had the 90 in it. Both didn't give me any clearance. The zerk fitting has a ball end on it and that hits the bracket. I was thinking about grinding the bracket away but the mounting hole is very close. I may check with the auto parts and see if there is another zerk that would fit. I'm not using the Toyota Box, however I may opt to change that next. I'm not sure what type of box I have. I know it's not the original. The column appears to be a BMW or VW?
I redrilled a new location and tapped out the hole for the new zerks. Actually was pretty easy and a clean operation. Now for the rest of the conversion.
