hey guys,
just put a new hurst shifter in my truck. (88 f150, mazda 5 speed)1st 2nd 3rd 4th and reverse work fine. 5th....no good. doesnt wanna go into 5th, then if i force it into 5th, it makes a light grinding sound. this sucks. then i put the stock shifter back into it, and it goes into fifth with no drama. might it have to do with the shift plugs? i know i should have replaced those while i was there, but i didnt. too excited about the shifter. but now its a headache and a half. any info would be greatly appreciated.
alright boys and girls, got the hurst shifter squared away today. here is the problem according to the guys at southern gear (http://www.yp.bellsouth.com/sites/southerngear/).we looked at the adapter plate and the top plate of the tranny today and found out that the notches on the bottom of the plate were not large enough to clear the pins in the transmission. one guy said that the pins in my transmission were the larger aftermarket type, the other guys said that all the pins were that size, not just the aftermarket ones. but at any rate, we enlarged the notches on the adapter plate and BOOM, I GOT 5th GEAR BACK. anyway, gotta run, i got a date with 5th gear and the highway....see ya, and Snowman, that may have been your prob too. Anywho, Im out
mike
Thats awesome that you got it workin, good job. My prob was the whole 4x4 thing... i dont know who told you it would work with 4x4. I myself talked to two different techs, and had a reputable transmission shop talk to someone as well. Hurst does not make any shifters to work with 4x4 transmissions, but if anyone gets one to work on a 4x4 mazda 5 speed, please lemme know how! When i had it in from installing myself i was droolin, just awesome. I only had 2nd, 3rd and 4th. It shifted VERY hard and there was a slight constant grind (not from the gears). Besides everything that was wrong it was sweet, shift throws were really short and fast. Was hard for me to return it, looked so good installed (lots o chrome).
well snowman, the only other 88-91 ive seen tih this shifter was a 4x4, but all I know is his first name, and he had never heard of this site(though i made sure to tell him to join but at any rate, i know ill see him on august(i know thats a long time from now......doh) and ill ask him if he has any probs. so if you're ever in bristol(thats where hes from, not me) look for a 87-91 bodystyle, grey on white f150. his name is glen. thats all i know. but ill ask my other buddy eddie if he knows how to get in touch with him....he may know. ill let ya know if i find anything out at all. till then, thanks for the encouragement.
