my 88 is just like yours, but in my folding armrest, ther's two shallow cup holders. they dont work very well though, the drinks fall out when you turn or stop.
mines a xlt too, thats weird that it would change over two years like that. you could cut two holes halfway through the armrest and glue some cupholder inserts in there. just a thought. or you could get the window hanging kind from a parts store.
I don't know about you guys, but the cup holders in my fold down center sections are simply awesome! They even hold the monster 64oz drink cups from the gas stations! Now the change and cassette holders I had no use for so I took them out.

My 4x2 92 XLT Auto tranny came with a stock interior color-coordinated two cup holder. It is mounted in front of the bench between the driver and passenger. I can slide the seat forward and back cause its off the tranny hump. There are two studs in the front face of the bench seat and the cupholder is notched to slide right on the studs. I can pull the cupholder right out and clean it when it gets too dirty and put it right back in (i.e no tools req'd). I would check out the salvage yards and see if you can find one. Problem is, you need the two studs in the seat, and is there enuf clearance if there is a manual shifter.

I have exactly like your talking about on my 95 although I have a 5 speed transmission so I only have one cup holder there because of the shifter. If I'm not mistaken they also had holders that go there that can hold 2 cups. I think you got one cup holder if you got the manual transmission.
