Transmission whine
Got a nice whine coming from the tranny at all speeds and a plethera of metal shavings in the pan so my mechanic says.. He thinks its the planetary gear. Went on to say that once the tranny was dropped if it is the torque converter the repair would be much cheaper than say it not being the torque converter at which point he would have to tear down and rebuild.. Input from anyone who has been through this before??? Trying to avoid his potential worst case scenario of 1800$. Is it true that these days its better to rebuild and reinstall your tranny than a rebuild from say jaspers or the like??

I have a 99 SOHC that did the same thing at about 113,000 miles. Metal shavings in the pan, fluid was black. It only made the whining noise very shortly before it gave out. The O/D light would blink most of the time. Mine turned out to be the torque convertor, which had failed and took out the pump. If I remember right, the guy I took it to charged $1600 because he ended up rebuilding the tranny due to all of the metal floating around.
