I just got a parts van with a supposedly good E4OD, the engine is shot & parts are removed so no real way to test the tranny & putting it in on a gamble isnt my cup of tea. the Fluid looks decent not cheery red but not brown either smells good.
Is there any dyno test for trannys or maybe getting a Oil Analasis on the tranny fluid?
2nd Question. How long can a tranny sit & still work the same as it used to? my only experience is with complete cars working fine when parked but sat a couple years & all kinds of stuff is screwed bad gas, dried up seals, rusted exhaust, brake problems , vermin infestation, etc.

If it has sat for a few yrs, definatly replace the front and rear seals, the filter, pan gasket and add new fluid. I don't think thiers a way of telling if a trannie is bad or not by fluid smell or color, because I bought a AOD for my F150 and it had nice fluid smell very new look and had bad clutches in it,,so the only way to know without it costing an arm and a leg is freshing it up and install it and see were it's at. I know thats not what you wanted to read but thats the best for trannies that you dont know nothing about, or you could just take it apart and inspect it but thats way out of the question right. Telling that the tranny is good based on the fluid is definitely a blind shot since nothing prevent s someone changing the ATF on a shot tranny to look it good. However, if the fluid looks/smells really bad, that is likely to be indicative of either a bad tranny, or neglect, which usually leads to a bad tranny, anyhow.
On a personal, I had to tow a friend's car home one time (tranny quit) and not only the ATF fluid was low (initially), but it looked like a black tar, and had a consistency of a cold 20W50 oil.
