I have a71 f100 4x4 and im looking to put a dana rear end in im going to look at one for $100 but i dont really know what to look for to know if its the one i want all he knows is its out of a ford. I hear people talk about spline count and and spring perches can you give me some ideas what i want and dont want? Thanx
The Dana 60 is a F250, 350 rear end that uses 8 lug wheels. The F100 mostly uses a Ford 9in. with a few Dana 44s scattered in. On 4X4s the front & rear gears need to be matched. If you have a 3.50 gear now you need to replace it with a 3.50.
The rears came from the factory with a metal tag on one of the nuts holding the center section. See if you can find it, that will give you a head start on finding a replacement.
If you take off the front drive shaft and run your truck with out it, no harm will be done. I've done it myself. The imperative thing is to make sure you put the same gears in the front as your new rear diff has, other wise it will bind and wreck stuff.
note:
If you put a Dana 60 in the rear it will most likely have 3.73 or 4.10 gearing. But it also has 8 bolt rims so you will have to find 3 of those because you'll need a spare in case of a flat!!
I changed out the rear of my 69 F100 to the Dana 60 out of a 72 F350. The perches and everything bolted right up. The only change was to cut about an inch off the splines to shorten the drive shaft. I had to carry 2 spares (5 bolt and 8 bolt) for about 6 months until I changed the front suspension to a 79 F250. I figure that old F100 is now a 7/8 ton pick up with a one ton rear and a 3/4 ton front.

Don't forget some 60's trucks like mine came optional with a Dana 60 5-lug. Mine is numbers matching D60 with 3.54 gears.
