I have a 96' 2.3L 5spd that needs the tranny fluid changed and i am not sure how to do it. I has been a while since i have crawed under there but i remember there not being a pan. Is it just a drain bolt? Then after i drain it is there some kind of flush i need to do? Any help would be appreciated.
THANKS
on the 5 speed there is a drain bolt labeled drain, it takes a 22mm or 23 mm socket. let it drain and put some cheap ATF in it and drive for a bit and then drain it again and put some high quality, name brand mercon ATF in it.
hotwheel_2000 - el conquistador is right. The cheapest/easiest way to clean it out is to drive a bit with new fluid and change out again for some quality fluid. Just check to make sure your trans takes ATF. Not sure about your year truck, but some previous Rangers used ATF and some used gear oil. I only mention so you can check to make sure.
If you don't have one you may want to consider getting a $15 hand pump that will make pumping fluid in the Fill hole easier. Also don't over tighten the bolts since stripping those would be bad.

On the other hand, the easiest way I found to do it is to buy some 1/2" clear hose, about 4ft or so and route it up and underneath the hood, stick one end in the fill whole, and use a funnel on the other end to pour. You have to have somebody under the truck to tell you when to quit, but I've found this to be the cleanest way.
Well, I'm off to change the plugs/wires in my 91 2.3L. Yup... you all know what a pain this is going to be!

at my local advance auto they sell a tube that has a special end on it that screws right on the oil bottle. you can also open and close the hose when need be so you dont spill fluid works great for me.
to add a little to what G2IC_Wraith said. the drain and fill plugs only need to be torqued to 25-35 ft-lb.
