Unhappy re-start problems

My '36 1/2 ton starts good the first time but after she's warmed up and driven abit and shut down, she won't re-start until something cools down. Any suggestions??? Thanks!!-JH

Jon, I assume this thing is original. If so ,the primary circuit to the coil goes through a resister mounted on the inside of the firewall . The idea is that as the resister heats up, resistance increases, which in turn drops the voltage going to the coil and points down to 4.5 volts. This lower voltage going through the points leads to less pitting and consequently longer point life. This system worked well [maybe!!] 60 years ago when these units were new, however, things such as coil windings happen to deteriorate over the ensuing 60+ odd years, and one ends up in the position you are currently finding yourself in. One old trick is to 'short out ' the resister with a penny in order to give the coil a full 6 volt kick; I much rather prefer to rebuild the ignition system using a 'modern' coil, which will give 100% reliability . If your 36 has already been converted to this system , then the likely candidate for your problem starting 'hot' would have to be condenser. Hope this helps; feel free to write me off list for any further assistance, Brian
