I have a 92 explorer 5speed manual 4x4, last winter (03-04) i put a new clutch and clutch master cylender in my explorer, it probally only has 6000 miles on the new clutch, i leave my explorer at home since im a college stundent. But anyways after extended driving the car begins to shake when you are lifting your foot off the clutch in 1st gear and reverse, then stops when your foot is completly off the clutch. Once it sits for a while like over night it will not do it anymore, what could be the cause to this, should there anything that i should be concerned about, i will be driving my explorer up to school in the fall it is about a 2hr drive want to make sure nothing is wrong.
Unfortunately, clutch chatter can be caused by a number of things such as:
-Flywheel not resrufaced or resurfaced improperly when the new clutch was installed.
-Bad u-joints
-The use of an agressive clutch disk (one that is used for racing)
-Defective pressure plate or disk.
-Oil or grease on the disk face.
-Worn or damaged clutch linkage.
Basically just have to go through the process of elimination to fine the cause.
While moving from hot to cold weather, it may appear the slave cylinder fails, as when you push the clutch in and it stays in gear, or after starting
and putting the clutch in, it won't go into gear. One solution is to change out the slave cylinder / clutch fluid and bleed the system.
It appears the fluid picks up water just as brake fluid does.
This has saved me twice when the diagnosis was "remove the transmission to change out the bad slave cylinder"
Golf boy - you sure you changed the master out? I think maybe you cahnged the slave out since that's pretty much what you do when you change a clutch. The slave is inside the bellhousing and it moves the clutch plate in and out. The master is up above on the otherside of the firewall from the clutch pedal itself.
Let's say you did change the slave and bleed eveything properly, what you describe does not sound like a master cylinder issue. When the mater fails, you basically can't disengeage the clutch and can't get it into gear. Nothing in the hydraulic side of the clutch will cause the truck to shake.
It sounds to me like you didn't turn the flywheel - machine it flat. Whne a cluthc is cold it grips a lot better than when hot. When it's hot and slips - you get chatter and shakes.
