I am going to make an air intake for my truck and was just wondering how big a hole you guys put in your radiator support?
and would it do any damage if I just eliminated the snorkle over the battery until I got the new one finished?
As long as you still have an air filter you will be fine with out the snorkel, but you will be pulling in warm air from the engine compartment VS the "cooler" air in front of the truck.
As for the size of the hole, depends what you are gunna do, and what size pipe your gunna use, 4" is what my IDI will be getting when I make the intake.
there is a guy here who built his own custom ram air intake set up, I forgot his name, but theyhad a bunch of pics, along with the one of the hole through the rad. support. I think it was dave Sponaugleor.
I could only get 3 x 9 inches through by the radiator and still be able to fabricate a bracket to support the radiator.
I just removed the bracket completely.
Then I used some flat steel to make a new bracket.
Also I cut some of the flange off the radiator to gain an extra bit of width.
Do be careful when you measure grill clearance, I could not reinstall mine due to the scoop stuck out to far.
Then I got to busy at work to mess with it.
But it did make the truck a lot more fun to drive, but then I also have a turbo.
At 70 MPH I have about 3 pounds of boost showing on my boost guage with my foot off the throttle.
So that is about what you will have with a NA motor.
Rain does not affect the engine.
Snow is a different story though.
I have to unhook the air duct from the air filter when I am driving in falling or blowing snow, or it blocks the air filter and the engine dies from lack of air.
I also change my air filter at every oil change, lots more bugs and such.
