ignition timing ques

I just finished my efi manifold swap on my 96' 351 to an Edelbrock Performer. I also have FIPK and 56mm TB. Per Ebrocks instructions it says to advance timing but doesnt say how much. I set it to 12 deg TDC and so far so good. No pinging not sure how much more to go if any. My other ques is the timing was set with spout connected. What does this do if anything ? I guess I'm confused with spout connected-disconnected. What is the difference ?

with the spout connected the timing will be retarded a lot. You have to remove the spout to set the timing correctly.

Okay. So sould I remove the spout and reset it to 10 deg and then advance ? It seems to run tip-top as it is right now ?
