shifting problem

I was having some problems with the shifting on my 96 Bronco. Some times it would shift very hard in every gear sometimes it would set a code Po500 (vehicle speed sensor malfunction) and sometimes not every time it would start flashing the OD light on the shifter one thing to look for if you are having this problem is if your speedometer is still registering or not.If it is it could be like mine and be in the PSOM(programmable speedometer odometer module) in the instrument cluster the speed sensor signal leaves the PSOMtogo to the Cruise,ECU for the antilock brakes and the PCM(powertrain control module) for tranny shifting. THis has drove me nuts for a while. Hope this helps someone out. Thanks Bigroy

the mlp solenoid could be the issue or the VSS located on the top of the rear diff. remove it and inspect, clean and install it back in and drive. if it continues your tone ring in the rear diff may be damaged to inspect that you must remove the rear diff cover .

It sound like the same thing that happened to my '96 EB,it would be fine for about twenty miles and then the OD light would blink on and off, the trans would shift very hard. it puts the trans in emergency mode, Kemicalburns is correct, it was the VSS on the top of the rear diff. there is one bolt that holds it in place, unplug and pull out. you can get a new one at the dealer for about twenty bucks. they'll know what your talking about because it seems to be a big problem a lot of us have. Once replaced, I haven't had a problem, works perfect.

Thanks for all the replys and ideas. I probably didnt make myself clear but I got my Bronco fixed. I had gone with all the ideas that Kemicalburns and Itmedic25 mentioned
with no luck finally found a bad PSOM was causing the problem. Which made sense because my speedometer never quit working. Thanks Bigroy
