Assuming you are starting out stock, you got a little work to do before you can add a chip. The chips/tuners will create a LOT of heat (exhaust gas temps) and that needs to be addressed first. Most common mods are a bigger, better flowing intake, 4" exhuast and gauges (pyro, tranny temp(for auto) and boost). This all will help your engine breathe better and able to monitor what your truck is doing. Once that is done, take a look at chips/tuners.
I personally like flip chips, I have one and it's great to be able to change your settings on the fly, and you can get them custom burned to what you want, but you'll pay for it.
Tuners (SCMT, etc) are good, have the handheld unit to read codes off the truck, and not quite as expensive.
Go to the powerstroke forum and do some searching and reading, plenty of info!

You CAN get a chip before getting a new exhaust etc.

I straightpiped my exhaust, did a homemade intake, and have never seen temperatures over 1100 degrees in the 78 hp setting of my diable chip.

If you plan to tow thats a different story... I would say to get a pyro at the VERY least, just to watch yourself and know when to back off. Use your head when chipping it, don't run a high perfomance tune if the rest of your truck isn't ready. Run an economy tune ~50 hp and use your head you should be fine.

ok. i dont plan to tow very much at all, becauase my dad has a 04' 6L PSD and he get free fuel from work so he get to tow everything. but i am planning on doin a custom intake and go to a 5" exhaust. i just want a good solid chip that i can get 50 extra HP out of everyday, then when i get the rest of my mods done, i can crank it up on occasion and have some fun. i dont know if this fits with any specific brand or style at all thought.

Id recommend any of the flip chips from dp-tuner.com Jody Tipton works wonders with the PSD programming, and can really make these things sing, as well as get incredible fuel mileage. I have a 4 position flip chip that has worked out great, and woke up the truck in more ways than words can describe, I only paid 260 for it used, and 50 bucks to get it reflashed for my PCM. If you want a flip chip, I think the best you will see is from DP Tuner.
