Just got a remanufactured distributor, and the thing won't go in! It lacks going all the way down by about 1/4". Oil pump is not istalled, so that's not a problem. There are no burrs anywhere on the distributor or the block. Am I missing something obvious, or what? This is in a 351W of unknown year.
CantDrive55 ,
Is it binding on the O ring ? Some of the O Rings fit very snug . If that looks like the problem , spray a little WD 40 on the O Ring and see if it goes in . Since you said the yr of the engine wasnt known , are you sure you got the right distributor ?

It's not getting to the o-ring, it stops just before it. I took it back and compared it to my core, and length was the same. I'm thinking the dimameter of the drive gear's may be diffrent. Guess I'll go check that next. Thanks
push down on the distributer body, and have someone kick the motor over for you. This should seat the distributer. This is because the gears on the cam and Dist. have curve-cut teath and must be rotated so they'll mesh properly.
I'm building the engine and it's still on the stand, but I tried pushing down while turning it over with a breaker bar and no luck. Any way I went back to the store again and measured the old and new ones with a micrometer and the they both seemed identical. Same number of teeth on the gear too. Took the old one back home and of course it slipped right in. I just could not see anything it was hanging up on. Have to try a diffrent store I guess.
