I have a 2001 SCREW 5.4 that just blew out the bottom of the radiator while I was on an out of state fishing trip. I managed to make it back home, stopping every twenty-miles or so to fill up the radiator. I found on shop (Autozone) that had a radiator in stock. All other retailers had to order. When I changed the radiator out and fired up the engine to check for leaks, I noticed transmission fluid leaking from the top line. I retightened and tried again with the same results. I pulled the radiator back out and noticed that it did not have transmission line connecters for the flared fittings which the stock rad did. Is this a common problem? Can I buy some type of adapters or is this the wrong radiator?
Nothing else was in the box. It did appear the box had been opened previously. I will call around to check if these fittings should have been supplied. I have learned the some people have had problems fitting non-Ford replacement radiatiors. Finding Ford parts at a reasonable price has been a problem for me. I changed the tranny fluid and filter the other day. When I purchased the filter at the auto parts store, they required me to tell them whether I had the shallow or deep pan. I had no clue. I got the deep pan filter and it of course did not fit. I returned and got the shallow pan filter and it did not fit. After about thirty minutes of researching their computer, the helper pulled up for a 2002 filter. This was the correct filter. The helper stated that this is a common occurence for Ford. I have alo learned that there are 10 different front brake rotors available for a 2001 F150. I hope I have better luck in the future. I also own a 2000 gas guzzling Expedition.
Figured out the problem. Autozone had shorted me the two adapter fittings. They ordered another and I installed today. All good so far. Autozone was even nice enough to give me a 10% discount, replace the coolant lost, replace the Merc V lost and threw in some degreaser to clean up the mess. Total cost was less than $260.00 including tax. Minus the hassle and down time, I think it was a pretty reasonable jesture on their part.
