Its been a while since I've posted... Been reading alot though. Anyway, I have a question...
I have a '73 F-100 4x4 360 (D2TE) 2bbl carb. I buddy of mine gave me a Holley 600 4bbl (says it works fine) and an factory (iron, heavy but also free) 4 bbl intake from his 390. The intake casting is a C3AE. Is there anything I need to know about as far as combatability with my 360 is concerned?
My plan was to have the intake hot tanked, paint it and install it asuming it is totally compatable. But with nine years in between them, I thought I'd better check first.
The ports should line up fine. Check 'em though, I had a C8AE-A intake on my old 360 and it worked great, along with the 600cfm holley. I know the early heads had larger intake ports; I'm not sure on the intake manifold though. If you find that the manifold does have the bigger ports, it's not the end of the world, you can easily open up the intake ports to match. Headers will help get the most out of it also.
Oh, almost forgot, if you need to open up the head intake ports, you'll have to remove and disassemble the heads (remove valves). It's not hard, but you'll need a valve spring compressor. Sears has 'em. This is to keep the metal shavings and grit out of the engine. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.
Yep the intake should work good. I bought a 1964 4bbl intake for a tbird or something and the it bolted right up to my 66 truck 352FE, the angle at which the carb sits is a little different, but I lucked out as it sits flat as a pancake. The intake worked great, nearly all FE intakes are compatible.
Another thing, if the Holley turns out to need a rebuild, dont sweat it. You can get a Holley rebuild kit for about $20 from summit, plus there is an infinite supply of parts and upgrades for that carb.
I wanted to give you all an update on the intake and carb swap. I had the intake hot tanked and then painted. I also rebuilt the carb. The install went well. Removed the hood and used a cherry picker to remove and install the intake. Got everything bolted up and she fired right up. I was not able to get the 360 to run very well and checked for the usual things I know to check.
Once I got it to run as well as I could, I took the truck down to a local FE guy.
Anyway, he checked it out, corrected a few things on the carb and checked the timing. He also found the distributor was shot. Now that the carb has been tuned and the dist replaced, the truck runs great.
Now I'm fighting a single two inch enhaust pipe. Thats going to be my next upgrade. Dual 2.5 inch with some flow masters then some day a 390 conversion.
Thank you for the replies! Your input was helpful.
Jeremy
BTW: My neighbor sold me some new wheels for $10.00. When I get them put on, I'll update my gallery photo.
Jeremy Glad to hear all is well with your FE now!!! When ya get your dual's have the shop put in a crossover tube or an X-pipe on the Exhaust also...they do help !! And Like Rusty said above a set of header's will help the engine breath quite a bit!!
It sounds like you feel strongly about headers. If I understand your subtle message, your saying I should get some headers? LOL Gotcha, message received.
All kidding aside, yes I plan on getting some headers. The problem is there are so many things I want to buy for the truck and not anough green stuff to go around.
Few upgrades will give a power increase like headers will, the FE has the worst exhaust manifold design in the history of automobiles. Headers, must be next, the only cost a hundered bucks.
