OK I asked this question a couple of months ago but I never got much of a response. I have 4x4 79 F250 custom. I dont want to lift it. (right now at least) I have finaly got enough money now to buy tires, and i was wondering if 33x12.50x16.5 tires would fit it without rubbing up front. If you know please reply. I think they will but I am not sure. I am 16 and this is my first truck and I love this body stlye. I got it for $600. It was well worth it. it is a 4 speed. black. The body is in good condition. A little rust on the rear wheel arch. And it needs a paint job. only 90,000 oringinal miles. My dad and I both thought that 600 bucks was a steal. First I am going to by tires and wheels. I am looking at some trxus mud tires with outlaw 2 wheels. but i am open to opinions.
Hi, sounds like a nice buy. I just put 33's on my 78 F250 with no lift. I think for next winter I am going to try to get 35's under it. Looks like I still have plenty of room for them. Glad to see another young Ford man. Erv
My '78 F250 is running 33x12.5x16.5 on it now without any lift, check out my gallery. Will go up to 35's on ARE wheels this fall but will need at least a leveling kit installed up front beforehand.
my buddy fried this on his 1979 ford he tryed to put a set of 33's on with stocl suspention that worked fine and fit fine. Then he tryed to put 35's on it and they fit when the front tires were pointign treight forward but as soon as you turn the front wheels they hit. ( i forget what they hit but i remember him telling me this.) Also what is the metric equivelant to a 33x12.50? Is it a 305x70? Also how tall is a 285x75? I think the 285x75 is jsut as tall as the 305x70 but jsut not as wide. I have a set of 16inch rims and would liek to put a set of 33's on it but they are only 7 icnhes wide will i need new rims?
thanks,
Jimmy
PS I heard a 305x70 needs a 8inch rim to fit. what does the 285x75 need?
thanks guys!
I have 35"s on a STOCK 76 f-100, so you should have no prob with 33's. The only thing i get into is with a little flex i kiss the bottom of the front fender, but my last truck (same thing only 74) was trimmed up to the body line in very front by bumper, and the only problem I had was once I got the fronts off the ground and landed and they touched in the upper fender.
Why not lift it? Throw some junkyard highboy front springs in there, and some blocks in the back, and you'll have a cheap 4 inches, ready for bigger meats lol I gotta give you some crap, I turn 18 thursday, had a job since i turned 16, and every penny has seemed to find its way into my truck one way or another
Dito what they said Check my gallery. I have a 78 F-250, with maybe 3"-4" of lift in the front, and 2" blocks in the back (with the stock 3"). It has 38" x 15" Super Swampers on it with out rubin', lock to lock.
Ran 37" goodyear MT's on my stock 78 F250 4x4. Did have an add a leaf up front to level it out( 1" 1 1/2 or so). Just trimmed the front bottom edge of the fenders for a little clearence insurance. I ran a Goodyear for 5 years and we mounted all sort of tires up to rims, regardless of it said in the book it would work or not. In fact I prefered running those 37's ( 12.5 wide) on a 6 inch Ford factory rim ( 16.5). I ran my 325/85R16 Michelins on 16x7's...that worked great too.
Ended up putting a 3" body lift on it as it just looked so goofy with the huge rubber and no lift at all.
Current proeject I will try to mount 41's with a 4" body lift and some trimming of fenders about 4-6 inches each end. These are 12.5R20's ( making up the rims as we speak) and are 20x9 wide. Should be interesting

Another thing to think about is most tires are over rated in there size. Some 35's are only 32 and some change. Most 35's are 34.8. Ect. I was told 35's wouldn't fit on my truck so I went with 33's. There seamed to be alot of room so I started measuring. Come to find out they were only 31"s. A true 35 would probley rub but most 35s would fit with no problem. Most tire guys have no idea about true tires sizes and only know what they read in there rfittment guides and what they read on the tires side wall. My advice use a tape measure and measure varieus tires. swampers are often times real close to what they say on the side wall. Just my 2cents. Thanx.
