Question Wheel bearings bad?

My front wheel bearings on the Ranger were somewhat loose before I redid the brakes with new rotors. The rotors came with new races and the bearings felt fine, so I reused them and torqued them down correctly. Checked the other day and they were a bit loose again. Tightened them up and it took a lot more force than normal. More like 15-20 foot pounds.

Does this mean the bearings are bad?

It depends if you followed proper proceedure and tightened them sufficently the first time. This includes rotating the rotor several times each direction as you are tightening the nut. BTW, I assume you visually inspected the bearings and the old races for obvious damage while you had it apart, right?

Yep, did all that. Old races and bearings looked ok. Checked them in the new races before installation and they felt fine. And used a torque wrench during the tighten-spin-loosen-retighten sequence.

I don't like mixing new/old bearings/races. Give them a few days and see if everything settles in before worring to much.

I'm with Ken. I always replace the bearings along with the rotors when dealing with rotor/hub combos. Pretty cheap insurance.
