I have a 97 mazda b2300 and i can definitely say to all to watch their u-joints for anything bad, vibration, unbalanced shaft. i was going 90mph one time just to see what i could get out of my 2.3L and all of a sudden, intense, intense shaking all over. Turns out, there was a u-joint installed by my dealer(bought it from a new car dealer in their used car lot) that i have to grease and they didnt mention to tell me at all. I am one of the lucky ones, the front u-joint only became dislodged it never totally fell off the yoke. It cracked the yoke when it happend but did no damage to anything. Just wanted to say that, so be careful, especially if there is any vibration whatsoever, might want to get under the truck and see what kind of u-joints you have, especially 97 and older models. Just think about that next time youre driving 90mph, because i do now. And another thing, i hit 95 or so b4 the uphill that killed my u-joint so 97 and older trucks may reach 100 or not, i dont fully know.
That could have been pretty scary. When I was drag racing we had a driveshaft loop to prevent the pole vault manoever. I guess I just wanted to make a couple of things clear. First being a granpa I don't drive like a knucklehead or I try not to and second I remember living back east driving the I-75 through Michigan the speed limit was 70 and we would cruise at 90 with almost zero chance of getting a ticket because they would have to stop nearly everyone. My dad remembers when Michigan had no speed limit.
Back in the early days of drag racing you could take a pass down the track in just about anything that would move. I remember one time when an old guy pulled to the line in a bone stock Pontiac 4-door sedan. He had the engine screaming when he pulled it into Low gear. The rear U-joint broke, bound up under the car and the front U-joint broke, leaving him sitting at the line with the driveshaft sitting on the strip. I helped push him off the track. It was funny yet sad.
