Hot intake manifold

I did some driving around town this morning and shortly after performed a compression test of the engine. When I rested my hand on the intake manifold it was almost hot enough to burn. I know there is the EGR valve but isn't it supposed to get cooled by the coolant flowing through where the egr gases come in? Is it normal for it to get that hot?

'92 F150 XL 4x4, 5.0L AOD, Headers, K&N Air Filter, 3.55 Gears, 31x10.5x15 Tires.

Hot intake manifold

The valve does get quite hot-it's attached to the engine, and hot exhaust gases pass through it. It's also right above the manifold.

Thanks dougnickels but my main concern is if it being that hot is normal? That would sure affect performance. I don't have any trouble codes and the power drops significantly after the engine is warmed up.

Hot intake manifold

Yes it is normal to get hot. I would look at the cats, make sure you have sufficient flow out the tailpipes. That is a sign of the cat plugging up. What was your compression like? How about the obvious stuff like plugs, fuel filter, air filter and have you had the injectors cleaned?
