Please help me to identificate my engine.
Since a few days I own a F-350 ´91 for towing my motorhome. (Pretty rare combination here in Austria)
The engine in my truck should be a 7,3 liter Diesel, but a technician told me it could be a 6,9. How can I be sure???? Informations on ford trucks are very hard to find in Europe, so thanks for your help.
the 6.9 was dropped in 87, so you should have a 7.3 if nothing has been changed. there should be a tag on the passenger valve cover that will identify the motor.
torque ,,, If you look at the cylinder heads, right above the exhaust manifold, you will see a line of head bolts. Along that line of head bolts, if you notice bolt boss ribs (strength webbings) you have the 7.3litre engine. If along that line of bolts there is no webbings (the area is flat), it is the 6.9 litre engine. Hope this helps you out.
Great, thanks guys - it seem I have a 7,3. Because the bolts have ribs, there is 7,3 liter label one the valve cover and the car seems to be a 1991. The only thing that keeps me thinking is, when I bought the car, people have repaired it before and inside of the car I found a head gasket cover for the 6,9. They maybe have mounted it in my car. Does this thing fit in the 7,3 too?
Is there another chance to check the engine size? Because the bolts could be changed, the label on the valve cover also does not give my safety and the year could be 1987 too, because I do not have the original title- our state keeps it when registrating a car in Europe.
if it has the webbings near the head bolts, its a 7.3...the head bolts for the 6.9 are smaller and would not hold the head in place if they changed the heads without doing extensive machining.
its a 7.3 but dont know what year, which really doesnt matter.
The door post label or VIN # should have the year of vehicle as a letter..9th position.

The serial # of the engine is located drivers side top of the block behind the timing cover/oil filler.. triangulated by the cover, head and valleypan hold down strap. The # will start with .....
