Tranny Problem Solving
Subject:
1997 Ranger, 2.3L 4Cyl, Automatic, 2WD - 140K miles.
Engine is solid, doesn't drop or burn a single drop of oil.
However, I am experiencing the following:
Random Hard Shifting
Slipping, can't tell if it is gear specific.
Odd rumbling noise when I shift from park to either drive or reverse but ONLY when COLD.
I know this isn't very specific, just trying to determine if I am looking at a real expensive job or a lesser one when I go to the mechanic and I'm planning a cross country trip with her in September. Truck runs great otherwise.
Thanks

Fluid level is fine, fluid does not smell burnt. No leaks. Transmission was last flushed at last oil change (3500 miles ago) in hopes that this would help the problems. No change after flush.
I've only owned the truck for two years so I can't really comment on prior maintenance/history. Problem first started occuring about 8 months ago.
