Tranny Problem Solving

Hi guys, wondering if I could get some help diagnosing some transmission problems I'm having.

Subject:
1997 Ranger, 2.3L 4Cyl, Automatic, 2WD - 140K miles.

Engine is solid, doesn't drop or burn a single drop of oil.

However, I am experiencing the following:

Random Hard Shifting
Slipping, can't tell if it is gear specific.
Odd rumbling noise when I shift from park to either drive or reverse but ONLY when COLD.

I know this isn't very specific, just trying to determine if I am looking at a real expensive job or a lesser one when I go to the mechanic and I'm planning a cross country trip with her in September. Truck runs great otherwise.

Thanks

- JT

Welcome to FTE!!!

The first place I start is the fluid level, fluid condition and then a fluid flush. What is the maintainence history of the tranny?

Ken:

Fluid level is fine, fluid does not smell burnt. No leaks. Transmission was last flushed at last oil change (3500 miles ago) in hopes that this would help the problems. No change after flush.

I've only owned the truck for two years so I can't really comment on prior maintenance/history. Problem first started occuring about 8 months ago.

Trannies aren't my thing but a common problem is the valve body gasket, there is also a TSB for TC slipping/not engaging due to a bad pump support seal.
