My '93 E250 (6 cyl) would not start twice in two days. The battery is good, the headlights will remain bright while trying to start. When I turn the key, the solenoid clicks loudly, but that's all.
The first time it happened, it started after a few minutes, and many attempts at turning the key.
The second time, I tried running a jumper cable from the battery + to the starter. There was a strong spark, but no movement of the starter. However, when I tried the key after that, it started.
It will either start normally, or it will only 'click'.
So, does it sound like I just need a new starter?

Make sure that you have an absolutely good ground between engine and battery negative. Make sure the ground from the battery minus is solidly connected, tight, to frame and engine. check check and recheck your ground cable. Then if you bring battery positive to the main lug on the starter withy a good booster cable, and it doesn't turn over the starter is bad.
My 92 E-150 did the same thing, with a 351 eng. Replaced the starter, and a few days later it would not start again. It turned out to be the wire from the solenoid to the starter. The 92 has a crimped on spade terminal, that pushes on to the terminal on the starter. The crimp terminal was all corroded and had a green coating on it. I replaced the wire and terminal, and solved the problem for two years. It happened again a couple weeks ago, and again the crimped terminal was all green and corroded. You need to pull the shrink wrap away from the crimp terminal to get a good look at it.
