Over charging battery

Hi, Iv'e got a1969 F600, dump truck, with a 361 heavy duty motor.
I put a new alternator and voltage regulator in, and I'm still getting over 17 volts to the battery when running.
Doesanyone have any suggestions on what I can check next?

Thanks,John

Make sure the voltage regulator is working properly, shouldn't be a problem. The new alts. put out more because we require more toys to be in use.

I would be leary of anything over 14.5-15volts. Maybe the new regulator is not working properly?

some of the old regulators had to be polarized, i cant remember which posts you do that with but it could be as simple as that. some of the old timers on here might know how to do it. no harm meant by the old timers thing as im 42 myself.

Thanks, I did a search on the topic after I started the thread, ( alittle backwards), and I read about a good ground. I'm going to run a new ground to the regulator and see if that helps.

Thanks for the replies, John

Do not discount a bad (shorted) cell in the battery, that can make the voltage regulator run high.

I have a feeling that will work for you. I had a similar problem and it was the ground for the regulator. It was on a 65 with points and would burn up the contacts in about 15 minutes.

It took me awhile to get around to doing it, but I ran a new wire from the neg on bat to the regulator and that solved it. It was charging at 17-19 and now it's down to 13-14.
Thanks for eveyones help, John
