Rewiring problems

I am looking at rewiring my 74 truck, it is mainly used for offroading and a little driving around town, I don't know how hard it would be to rewire it by buying wire and doing it myself or would it be easier to go and buy a painless wire setup. I only need the basic functions lights, turnsignals, heater, and fuel pump. I have aftermarket guages for just about everything and am running two batteries, any suggetions on what to do would be helpful or am i getting into to big a project

I myself would repair what you have. All the plugs will fit the factory components, and you can just solder and shrinkwrap any wiring that needs replacing. Soldering and then shrink wrapping the splices makes a nice looking job.

What are your exact problems? Replacing the all the wiring may not catch the problem.

I have blown up 2 pentronix ignitors, the wiring behind the switch has gotton really hot and burned the coating off been replaced, Switched replaced twice thought it was that. also the guy who owned the truck before me made a complete rats nest of the wireing under the dash he tried to wire in a new universal fuse block and i still haven;t been able to track everything down yet.

Read the instructions very carefully with the pertronix. See if they say it requires a resistor in the hot wire to the coil. If so, the previous owner may have re-wired this and eliminated the special resistance wire. This will make the coil run hot and may burn up the pertronix if it's not designed for a full 12 volts.

From your first post, I gather you didn't use much of the wiring behind the dash anyway. It sounds like it is all custom for the different guages. You could try to get an original wiring harness and fuse box, but it may not suit all the different stuff you have installed. So if you didn't feel like you could handle wiring each circuit individually, one of the universal kits may be the way to go.

The first Ignitor I had in it lasted for over 3 years and then when i moved, I it somehow got fried in movement, put the second one in and it lasted less than a month so i am completly lost now, I have not changed any of the wire since then but have had a battery that went bad could that have caused it.

If you did the old "pull the battery cable off while it's running" trick to see if the alternator was good, then yes, that could have caused it.
